Three newest winners named in
Ziyad Brothers Liquid Jameed Contest
(Cicero, IL/April 24, 2007) – Three more winners were announced this week in the popular “Liquid Jameed Promotion” sponsored by Ziyad Brothers Importing, one of the nation’s largest distributors of Mediterranean and Middle East foods.
The three winners are Heyam Alawamleh of Dearborn, Michigan, Amira Daoud of Bridgeview, Illinois, and Juliette Saffoury of Paramus, New Jersey. Each will receive one round-trip tickets to travel to Amman, Jordan valued at $1,500.
The Liquid Jameed Contest was launched last year to promote Ziyad Brothers Importing’s popular Liquid Jameed product. A coupon was attached to each package of Liquid Jameed sold and individuals could rub off the ticket to determine instantly if they were winners.
The three new winners are among hundreds who did not win immediately but participated in the “Second Chance” drawing.
They mailed back their tickets or entered their information online at Ziyad.com to qualify.
Their names were selected in a drawing conducted in April 2007.
“I am so excited about this. You called me to inform me I won on my birthday and that is a great birthday present. Shukran,” said Heyam Alawamleh.
“I purchased the Liquid Jameed from Greenland Supermarkets in Dearborn which carries a lot of great Ziyad Brothers Importing products. We love Ziyad products.”
Alawamleh said she was born in Jordan and is excited that she will be able to travel back there to see her family.
Amira Daoud, a 21 year old DePaul University student who works for Middle East Financial Services in suburban Bridgeview outside of Chicago, said at first, a family member tossed the entry not believing they anyone could win in a contest. Later, she retrieved it and it sat on a counter until she turned it in, discovering that she had won.
“I was born and raised in Chicago but my family is originally from Ein Karim, Palestine.” Daoud said. “My mom bought the Liquid Jameed from Harlem Food's Bakery on 92nd and Harlem to make Mensiff. We’re very excited to have won.”
The first winner of the contest is Law Student Tareq Abed Mohammad of West Covina, California, who found a winning ticket in a Liquid Jameed package he purchased in November 2006.
“My family was making Mensiff and they sent me to buy the Liquid Jameed at the local store and when I returned, I checked the tickets from the packages we purchased and when I rubbed off the second one it said I was a winner,” Mohammad recalled.
"My whole family is excited about this and think it is great that we can win through a Middle East food. We love Ziyad Brothers Importing products.”
“The Ziyad family is very happy for all of the winners and all of the people who participated,” said Nassem Ziyad, General Manager of Ziyad Brothers Importing.
“We are thrilled by the continued love for our products in the marketplace and this contest is just one fun way to give back to our loyal customers. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality food products and services to the public. We live our slogan, from Our Family to Yours because it really does mean so much for us and for everyone who enjoys Ziyad food products.”

Applicants are required to submit an essay of 500 to 800 words on how they hope to “Give Back to the Community.” Winners will be announced in August and scholarships will be presented at the beginning of September. Ziyad Brothers Importing was originally founded in 1966 by Ahmad and Ibrahim Ziyad, two immigrant brothers from Palestine. Their small retail outlet on Chicago’s south side specialized in hard to find Middle Eastern food products as well as the first Pita Bread bakery in Chicago catering to the Middle Eastern ethnic community.
The retail outlet later expanded into one of the first automated Pita Bakeries in the Midwest and began distributing Pita bread and Middle Eastern food products to other retail outlets. Ten years later, from these humble beginnings, Ahmad and Ibrahim Ziyad purchased their first warehouse located at 21st and Western Avenue.
In 1995, Ziyad Brothers Importing consolidated facilities and moved into the current location in Cicero, IL. A year later in 1996, Ahmad Ziyad passed away at the age of 56. His brother Ibrahim assumed the role of President. Ziyad Brothers Importing is a family owned and operated business. Ahmad’s sons Nemer, Nassem and Nazmy and Ibrahim’s son Nezar and daughters Leila and Sonia also work at the company.
Winning essays will be published on the www.ZiyadNews.com web site as well as on the web site of the National Arab American Journalists Association (www.NAAJA-US.com), and in participating Arab American newspapers and magazines.
